Looking for a solution for keeping your books and planning your budget?

You could buy the leading small business accounting software program. It’s powerful and has many features. But if you’re just starting out, or you run a very simple consulting or coaching business, you may find such software to be more complex than you need. It takes time to learn the system, procedures, and accounting entries required. And that’s time you can invest elsewhere in your business — in marketing, with prospects and clients, and in delivering services.

Assuming that you have an accountant (you do, don’t you?), then perhaps all you want is a way to keep track of the money flowing through your business, and a way of organizing information your accountant will need during tax season.

If only keeping your business’ money straight were easier…

Testimonials

I wish Rainwerks existed when I started. My experience didn’t adequately prepare me for the challenges I faced as a consultant/entrepreneur. I dealt with many issues via trial and error. Rainwerks would have accelerated my success.

Principal - Core Strength Marketing

Rainwerks’ program helped me think holistically about my competition and the needs of prospects and clients. It’s a structured way of thinking instead of simply giving away my value-add as a means to get repeat business!

What You Get

A multi-tabbed spreadsheet template for managing your invoices, revenues, business expenses including home office, use of personal car for business, and the tracking of your business mileage.

Paying your income taxes accurately and on time is a must when running your own business.  In this tab, enter your invoices, payments received, project expenses, and projected tax amounts.  This also allows you to quickly calculate your net income.
Each business transaction should be documented. Are you going to remember that Starbuck’s expense six months from now? No way.  In the Checkbook Ledger, you can manually enter your checkbook activity, or download it directly from your banking website.  It is important to categorize your business expenses as it helps your accountant easily prepare the necessary forms for tax filing season. “Accounting 101” (debits, credits, and all that) is built into the tool.
If you don’t pay all expenses with checks, you’ll need to keep track of your payments with plastic. Keeping a separate ledger for expenses on your credit card allows your accountant to easily reconcile balances on your credit card with the monthly check you write your credit card company.
Most independent consultants and coaches we know set up shop in a home-based office. Specific direct and indirect home expenses can be used as deductions on your tax filings. Form 8829 is an IRS form you or your accountant will use to calculate allowable expenses for business use of your home. To see an example of form 8829, visit the IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8829.pdf.
If you are traveling to client sites using your personal vehicle. If you itemize your deductions, and are not being reimbursed for these types of expenses, then you may want to submit these inputs to your accountant. There are two typical methods for calculating mileage, and Take the Argg! Out of Accounting supports both. Working with your accountant will help you determine which is best for your business.  Depending on your structure, form 2106 may be used to submit those auto expenses. This template uses those inputs to prepare your accountant if s/he finds it necessary to file these deductions. You can find the form 2106 at https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f2106.pdf.
If you're using your personal automobile for business, use this handy form to document your mileage. It takes only seconds to track your business miles every time you get in the car, and it'll be easy to have a completed schedule ready for tax season.

Product Developer

Michele Rath

After more than ten years in marketing roles for big companies, followed by part-time consulting for nonprofits for eight years, Michele decided it was time to start contributing more to her household’s income again. After jumping in with both feet, she realized she needed to quickly track her invoices, expenses and tax schedules. Michele ran to the local big box office store and grabbed a gleaming box of high-priced, pre-packaged, highly endorsed accounting software. She’d done her research; this was the best one out there. It cost more (okay, way more!) than she wanted to spend at the time. Just starting out, she wanted to keep her operating expenses as low as possible. Nevertheless, she rushed home and tore open the newly purchased package. She popped in the tutorial DVD and sat listening intently… for over two hours. Her eyes glazed over and her brain turned to mush. A very complex and comprehensive package it was. But she was just a budding solo consultant! This was way more than she needed, or wanted to spend time in learning. And at that point, time was money.

So she spoke with her accountant and fleshed out all the inputs he needed to properly file her tax return. Mindful of her expense budget, Michele wanted to minimize how much of his time she needed. What you see here in the Take the Arrg! Out of Accounting workbook is the result of a few years of pulling in all the needed inputs for Michele’s accountant. These inputs and calculations kept her tuned in to her business expenses, and more importantly, her growing net income.
